We are happy indeed to state that the National Perspective plan on Mini and Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) coordinated and submitted by NDRF and Aeronautical Development Agency has been accepted in principle by the Aeronautics Research and Development Board as a guideline for projects in MAVs. A demonstration of a mini Ornithopter and mini helicopter organized at Jakkur, Bangalore by NDRF in September 2003 and it was very much appreciated .NDRF is continuing its efforts to generate specific projects with working groups. The program on Quantum Well Infrared Photo detectors (QWIP) with IISc and Central Research Laboratory, BEL, has made good progress and the first QWIP (with 10 periods) has been fabricated and is under analysis. Similarly the bacteriorhodopsin project with Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnosis (Hyderabad) and Molecular Research Centre (MRC), Mumbai is moving forward with the requisite equipment installed and operational. A review is scheduled in January 2004 by Professor G. Padmanabhan former Director of IISc. Institutions like MS Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies and BMS Institute of Technology have commenced educational activities in micro and nanotechnologies for their postgraduate students. Overall the period has shown good progress in the area of micro and nanotechnology systems and we thank all who made it possible.
